Microbe-2 is an all-purpose 1-bit 6x6 px tileset/charset.

Microbe-2 consists of "shape", "detail" and "text" tiles, contained within a 16x16 tile image, as well as a Playscii charset file.

The tiles are 1-bit (two color) and inverting the color allows for more tile variation (for example, additional slope variants).

Microbe-2 is an "offshoot" of MRMOTEXT, designed as an even lower-fidelity experimental charset to further encourage improvisation and nurture creativity, allowing for rapid creation of textmode (and similar) art and concepts.

Licensing:

Microbe-2 may be used in both non-commercial and commercial projects, excluding those relating to or containing non-fungible tokens ("NFT") or blockchain-related projects. It may not be used in conjunction with generative artificial intelligence or machine learning projects. You may modify it to suit your needs. You may not redistribute or resell it. Credit is not necessary, but very much appreciated.

I'd love to see what you create using this tileset! I'm on Twitter, Mastodon and Bluesky so feel free to show me your work there!

I think it might make more sense to put the "No NFTs/GenAI" clause of the license over at Twitter|X; I can't imagine any Crypto/GenAI enthusiast willingly browsing here, or on Matsodon.

Besides that, very cool stuff, it's about time Playscii got a few new character sets, at least in my opinion.

6x6 pixels? I'm calling the police!

Uh oh :D :D

hi, this is a silly question but - how are you changing the colour of the tileset from black and white? I've tried in Tiled and Aseprite with not very good results... Are you implementing palettes somehow?

Hello! Probably the easiest way would be to use the charset with Playscii- that's how I'm creating textmode stuff all of the time :)

Most of the consoles I work with have 8x8 pixel tiles like the Coleco and Genesis.  Any chance for an 8x8 pixel version?

Well, MRMOTEXT is basically this but at 8x8 and with way more characters :)

Microbe was mostly done as practice, to see how low in resolution I can go while keeping a decent amount of details; I'm aware that 8x8 and 16x16 are much more practical for use on existing hardware/consoles, and I'm planning a 16x16 tileset or three in the future!

This looks amazing - may I ask what filter you are using for the images that look like a phone screen?

(+3)

Thank you! It's a custom lcd "emulation" process I'm developing in Blender :)

Hopefully it will be for sale soon! :))
