This is a really nice asset pack, love the style.

Just a question about licensing. I read the “You may not redistribute or resell it” part, and assumed that open source game projects are probably not a good fit for this asset pack since if you just included the entire spritesheets verbatim it’d be the same as redistributing.

Is that assumption correct?

There’s been two game jams where I’ve been thinking of using this but then remembered the open-source codebase requirement and thought “aagh, not this time” and changed to another idea with my own hand drawn sprites.

Perhaps a practical middle-ground is to ask the gamejam organisers if it’s fine to submit an entry with the spritesheet listed under .gitignore, but thought I’d ask here anyway incase I’m overthinking the whole situation.

Please go ahead and use the tileset, and be sure to send me the link when the game's done as I'd very much like to see it :D

Thank you for the blessing and quick reply, I will have to give it a try soon then!

These tiles are great. The 12x12 provides really great readability while also maintaining a minimal aesthetic which captures that old school roguelike feel. Also I love the way these rivers look.

Do you plan on making more sets in this scale?

Hey thanks! Yeah I really like the 12x12 size for 1bit tiles, I got another one up here actually :)
As they're fun to make, I'd say yeah I'll probably do more!

Looks great! Are the tileset under the png extension?

Thank you! Yes, the tilesets (and the palette) are provided as .png files.

Thanks!

I simply love your style but, I have a question: can I try to use like the logic of this tileset aka with the shapes and specialized tiles? and can I also use the palette?

Of course!

I thought it'd be useful to split the tiles into "shapes" and "specialized" stuff, like I did with MRMOTEXT, as it helps me construct scenes faster. As for the palette, I made it with the help of Dawnbringer's specialized palette analyzer for Grafx2, so it should (in theory) cover a large part of the RGB color space while having mutually distinct colors with the main focus on the primaries (plus magenta and some "nougat" tones).

Love your style a lot! I'm gonna use this; but I have a question...
I'm using unity and I'm wondering what would be the best workflow while making a game with this? playscii is great in its simplicity with 1 bit tilesets but you don't have a way to export a level data and objects into unity, REXPaint seems to be the same, so... What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Hey! Textmode is kind of niche but when done "properly" can both look very nice and be rather easy to work with. The way I see it, as I'm not aware of an actual textmode-compatible game engine editor existing, there's two options to implement textmode assets in a game:

-Either create a custom system or editor to interpret and manipulate textmode assets, create levels and objects and export the necessary data (which would allow for more creative freedom and ease of use, at the cost of having to make the editor "engine" yourself), or

-Improvise! I used LDtk with custom, pre-made tilesets (basically, copies of the "main" textmode tileset with several different color combinations) to make some nice looking results! It's more limited in the sense of available colors and creative freedom, and the duplicated tilesets can be a bit cumbersome to navigate, but allows the use of a really good, easy to use game-focused tile-based editor :)

Also, I'd definitely research the game-making aspect of Playscii, as it's intended to be a python-based game development tool. I'm certain it can export useful game data in at least *some* way, but it's always been outside of my scope of expertise so I can't provide much useful info on that.

Thanks a lot, Mr!

I see I could even put an entire level with each layer in a different png and import that into unity and slice the tiles, paste the level like that... not the most elegant way but I can add the object layer later inside Unity... well, it's a way. I'm gonna explore those other different approaches.

Thanks for your time, I'd be sure to show you what I'll make with all this in a near future, your assets are awesome, see you around!

If I’m making a game that’s using machine learning to validate procedurally generated levels, am I allowed to use your assets? Your tileset itself is not being manipulated to produce new art. Thx.

Okay! Also, I'd like to see the results.

Hey, seems like the curved minecart tracks are missing in the assets?

Hey! Are you referring to these?

Yep!

Could you please check tiles at coordinates 10,3 to 11,4? (starting from 0). What tileset are you using?

That's embarrassing 💀

Not at all, I've definitely had tiles go missing before, especially after I update the tilesets :)

For example, the arrow tiles in "Goblins" were all "arrow up" for quite some time! :D

The X3 version looks siiick

Hey! Amazing asset pack! Just wondering if there is an easy way to extract the font from the tilemap to use it in Godot?

(+1)

Thank you very much! What format should the font be in? I'm thinking of separating the font(s) somehow for easier access, also looking at possible ways to convert them to .ttf :)

(+2)

That would be great, yeah a .ttf should work! Thank you so much! :)

(+1)

Any word on a .ttf file?

Cheers

(+2)

This is simply amazing.

Thank you very much! I'll update it with the x3 upscaled version soon :D

Do you have any plan to add TTF font? It felt like none of your asset ever had them.

Really wish I could just use the font for dialogue in game engine

How should I go about making them?

Well, there are many ways found on internet:

Or maybe using this tool?

thank you so much for the new stuff you are working on, This has got to be my favorite asset ive ever gotten on itch! everytime you put up more screenshots with the stuff you make with this just shows how much variety you can make with such a small tileset.

(+1)

Thank you very much! I am also planning to expand this tileset with more stuff, similar to MRMOTEXT Extended :)

These are so cute! I'm on a little break from gamedev but next time I need to prototype something I'm SO grabbing this! It's looooovely! 💚💚💚 Edit whatever I'm grabbing it anyway

Thanks a bunch! I'm working on expanding the base tileset with even more stuff :D
